The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints along with the help of the Belize Red Cross (BRC), are donating over 350 wheelchairs to those in need. An official launch of the donation campaign was held at the church on Cemetery Road this morning. According to the Kipp Dennison, a volunteer, twenty wheelchairs are earmarked for Belize City residents.
Kipp Dennison, Red Cross Volunteer: “This is our Red Cross clinic to teach our members how to fit our patients to a wheelchair so they are custom wheel chairs for each individual so we are doing the training so that they know how to fit a customer and how to adjust the wheelchair so that the wheelchair fits that person perfectly to prevent any injuries, sores or for the safety of the patient. If you think you need a wheelchair why don’t you come in and we’ll do an assessment and we will determine what type of wheelchair or even if you are eligible for one of our type of wheelchairs because there are some requirements.
The Youth Director of the Red Cross, Monica Heredia, explained that they have eleven volunteers from the Red Cross that is assisting them with this project. She gave us some insight on how long this project is in effect and how many districts will be assisted with the wheelchairs.
Monica Heredia, Red Cross Volunteer, Youth Manager: “2019 was the last order of shipments we got through the donation of the Church of Latter Day Saints. Since then we haven’t had any so this is a refresher and also a new training for new technicians and old technicians and we finally have wheelchairs to distribute to people in need.”
