Yemeri Grove and Laguna Villagers have raised concerns about the possible surveying of land near the Machaca Reserve down south. The reserve is known for its diverse flora and fauna, including several endangered species, and the residents fear that any disturbance to the area could have devastating consequences for the environment. The residents’ concerns come after reports that a Toledo West Area Representative, Oscar Requena, had applied for a permit to survey the land in the area. Minister Requena was asked if the speculation of de-reserving a portion of the Machaca was in the pipeline, and this is what he had to say.
Minister Requena explains that the portion that they were looking at was an area that was virtually dead, so he believes it would not have been a major threat to the ongoing preservation efforts. But could this cause a snowball effect and give other people the notion that de-reservation is okay? This is what Minister Requena said.
