The man police believe is responsible for murdering 21-year-old Andre Vernon in front of his home in Belize City has fled the country. That’s according to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams. Vernon, a father of one, was gunned down around 2 a.m. on February 13 while socializing with his family on Madam Liz Crescent. His alleged killer arrived in a gold Mazda tribute taxi cab, exited, shot Vernon dead, and fled the scene in the same taxi cab. His family was able to positively identify the killer, who was a family friend, and says the police are dragging their feet in the investigation as no one has yet been charged for Vernon’s murder. However, ComPol Williams says the issue at this point is locating the suspect.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “It’s not that we’re dragging our feet. We appreciate the effort the family members have given to the investigation it certainly went a long way in us identifying who the killer is and from what we have been made to understand the killer may have fled to the US. We’re trying to establish where in the US that person went and once we can establish that then we will send through Interpol a warrant for his arrest and perhaps return to Belize. So if it is that the family members or anybody may have information pertinent to his whereabouts in the US we’ll be grateful to get that information so that we can move to the next step with the investigation but I do understand the family issue and I want to assure them that it is not as they think.”
Reporter: And you don’t think that the taxi man could have been an accomplice as well ?
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “We have no evidence to support that at this time.”
Notably, Jeffrey “Muscle” Ferguson is still wanted by police for questioning in relation to Vernon’s murder.
