With the United Democratic Party now having an elected standard bearer for the Belmopan constituency which means that the current Area Representative, Minister Oscar Mira, has an opponent for the next general elections. When speaking to the former UDP Minister, John Saldivar, he says that he is confident that he will be able to contribute more to the constituents. Today, the media asked Minister Mira for his reaction to Saldivar’s return. He says he is not phased.
Oscar Mira, Area Representative, Belmopan: “I continue to work and represent the people of Belmopan. It doesn’t do me anything. I’m glad now to know that there is a standard bearer for the UDP so I know who is my opponent. He was soundly rejected in the 2020 general elections. It wasn’t by mistake and it wasn’t just a one off thing either. I think that we are both different. Regardless of what he says he has been designated by the United States as being very corrupt and the people of Belmopan, not the UDPs , the people of Belmopan will decide. I think they are very much – they know that the work that I bring for the citizens of Belmopan is I give it all. We have been working on infrastructure, we have been working with aiding with educational incentives, we have been working in many ways things that the people of Belmopan I think are satisfied with the work that I’m doing and the representation that I bring to them. They had their convention, it’s over. I know who the opponent is now and we’ll continue to work. There is so much work to be done. The way Belmopan was left after thirteen years of their representation is not an easy fix but we have been working extremely hard to ensure that the citizens of this city, of Belmopan, get the best representation. Honest and integrity it’s something that my opponent talks about sometimes I wonder if he’s joking but it si something I think that for me my reputation and my integrity is what I have and that is what I have been representing the people of Belmopan with.”
