The Belize City Defenders put the hurt on the Benny’s Belize Hurricane on Friday, beating the team 75-66, in what was one of the hottest matches so far in this season of the Belize Elite Basketball League. The match was highly anticipated following the controversy surrounding Kirk ‘Shabba’ Smith Jr., who at the beginning of the season had signed with both teams. And, the game lived up to its expectations bringing the Belize City Civic Center to life with cheers from dozens of fans. The game was a nail-biter with both teams being neck to neck until the fourth quarter when the Defenders took the lead. However, fans were devastated when the Hurricane’s star point guard Clency “Coope” Lopez went down with an injury minutes before the long buzzer sounded. Vejea Alvarez caught all the action and spoke to Defenders’ team captain Nigel Jones, who was subbing for an injured Devin Daly, about the big win.
Jones scored 20 points, pulled nine rebounds, had two assists, five steals and, three blocks.
