Belizean man sues police department after being wrongfully charged and imprisoned for seven days

A man from Rural Belize says he suing the Belize Police Department after being wrongfully charged, imprisoned for seven days, and freed by the courts. Last Wednesday, 27-year-old Cecil Martinez was called by the police and informed that a warrant was out for his arrest. Martinez traveled to Belmopan and visited the National Crime Investigations Branch (NCIB), where he was immediately detained and later charged with the crime of obtaining property deception. Martinez claims that the police never informed him why he was being charged or how his number was obtained. According to him, it was until he was taken to court that the matter was struck out.
