The COVID-19 pandemic has not only affected public health but has also impacted the finances of individuals and businesses. Belize Water Services Limited (BWS) has been grappling with a surge in arrears since the onset of the pandemic. The company reported that arrears have exceeded three million dollars, highlighting the financial strain on its customers. BWS has been working to assist those who have been adversely affected by the pandemic. Public Relations Manager, Haydon Brown, says that they have been able to significantly reduce that number.
Haydon Brown, Public Relations Manager, Belize Water Service: “I know that we’re still out over $2 million dollars. I know when we had started this conversation back in COVID time I know our receivables we were out like over $3 million but I believe we have done some inroads and really have pressed because a lot of it was we’re not doing disconnections and so people were just continuing to I would say for right now abuse or take advantage of the situation. But we have since made some reduction in that regard.”
