And because the US is a big polluter country, Climate Change experts in the region have been monitoring the results of the mid-term elections in the US. That’s because there is this anticipation that Republicans will take control of the Senate and House of Representatives. Climate experts and activists say the ideas Republicans have proposed are insufficient or misguided and fail to address the magnitude and urgency of this crisis. We asked Minister Habet about it.
Orlando Habet, Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management: “There is a difference in opinion with some of them I don’t know if you can say universally that all the Republicans but certainly there was a change for us on the positive side with the new administration with the Biden administration and we have been seeing the support rising. We have representation from Special Envoy John Kerry and he will be here at cop 27. We are hopeful that we will be able to engage, we have been asked to see if we can have a bilateral meeting with special envoy John Kerry so I’m hopeful that we can do that before he goes back. We can’t talk for the US so we have to wait and see what will be their action and reaction.
