Commissioner of Police fires back at Leader of the Opposition’s resignation call

The Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, says he is not mincing words with the Leader of the Opposition, Moses “Shyne” Barrow. On Friday, Barrow called for Williams and his boss, the Minister of Home Affairs, to resign from their posts. Barrow stated that he believes both men have failed to make a meaningful impact on the country’s crime situation and need to go. Today, ComPol Williams responded to Barrow and says he believes the LOO is simply playing politics with a very serious issue.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “The truth is I heard the man said he wants five years, I don’t know if he wants five years to bring the country to where it should be or five years just to say that he was a Prime Minister or to try to be like this father but he will never be like his father. I can tell you I was at the state reception when the President of Taiwan came and myself and the Deputy Prime Minister were speaking the Leader of the Opposition came to where we were and he looked at me and said “The best Commissioner Belize has ever seen.” and I looked at him and I said “But every time you get on news you want to fire me.” He said “Well COMPOL I was instrumental, I spoke to my dad and told my dad to appoint you Commissioner because we know you’d make a difference.” and he said “I still stand true to that I think you’re the best Commissioner.” He said “but I just ask for them to fire you because that’s politics.” So again I don’t take offense to what the Leader of Opposition has to say he’s playing politics but you should not play politics with the lives of the Belizean people. When you say a person has become out of touch it means that the person doesn’t know what is happening around him or her. You are members of the media have you ever asked me something I could never answer you or I appear to be out of touch ? I make sure that I am familiar with everything that takes place and when it it time for me to account to the Belizean people through the media I’m always ready to account I don’t run from the media, I don’t shy away from you all as much as sometimes you call can be a pain in the butt I still bear and answer your questions and account to the Belizean people as I believe I should.”
