A father of four was killed over the weekend in a boating accident off the coast of Caye Caulker Village. Fisherman Jose Castro was spearfishing on Saturday afternoon when he was reportedly injured by his fishing boat. The 49-year-old received chop wounds to his leg and died while being treated at sea. Police Press officer, ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, explained that the Belize Port Authority has since launched an investigation into the incident.
ASP. Fitzroy Yearwood, Public Relations, Belize Police Department: “Sometime around 1:55pm police visited the Caye Caulker health clinic where they observed a Jose Abilio suffering from a large cut wound to his ankle and thigh and he was transported to the clinic by a passerby in another boat who saw him, he managed to get back into his boat but apparently he had already bled out. The victim’s surname is Castro. The wife indicated that he went to fish earlier that morning and she was notified that he was at the polyclinic. From just the basic information that was sent to me it would seem that he may have fell out of the boat and got cut by the propeller of his engine. But like I said we have to involve Port Authority especially when it’s a life lost by the accident and apparently he was on that boat all alone. We know that we have interviewed his common law who indicated that he went fishing. At this time I’m still awaiting the interim report and as soon as I have that interim report I will make that information available because when it comes to boating accidents sometimes it is investigated by the Port Authority and then forwarded to us.”
