The future of the proposed development of transforming the Port of Belize into a Cargo and Cruise port rests on the results of the project’s Environmental Social and Impact Assessment (ESIA). The project proposed by Waterloo Investment Holdings Limited has been met with concerns from the public and several environmental conservation organizations. Waterloo has resubmitted an application for review to its updated ESIA, and Prime Minister, John Briceño, says they will support the company’s investments based on the results of that assessment.
John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: “Waterloo they believe they have a very important investment to do in Belize but to us what is important as a government is that we must follow the law. We must follow the process and that applies for somebody that is in investing 1 million to one that’s investing 300 million and we made that abundantly clear to the investors at Waterloo that we are not going to cut corners because even if we were to attempt to do so other people are going to sue and it’s going to end up in court so it’s best that we do it right and we are going to abide by what the EIA tells us and if the EIA says that yes it’s a good project under whatever conditions it will have the full support if the government but if the EIA tells us that it should not be done for XYZ then we as a government will abide by that.”
