Health Ministry Cautions Public on Drinking from contaminated Water Sources

The Ministry of Health and Wellness is advising the public that due to flooding caused by the passing of remnants of Hurricane Julia over the weekend, drinking water sources in many areas of the country have become unsafe.  The Ministry says these may include municipal water systems (BWS), rural water systems, wells and those stored in water tanks and vats. Affected water may appear dark in colour, has an odour, or has floating fragments.  In addition, the Ministry advises that all sources used for drinking, cooking or bathing should be treated to make safe with bleach (Clorox) by either adding one tablespoon of bleach to five gallons of water or mixing the bleach and water completely and leaving it to stand for 30 minutes before using.   The public is advised NOT to use bleach that is scented.
