Man dies in RTI just outside Belmopan

A man died in the west last night following a road traffic incident. Love News has learned that the body of 33-year-old Pedro Raymundo Lemus was found dead near the dump site on the Hummingbird Highway, just outside Belmopan. Police Commissioner Chester Williams spoke to the media today about what police know. At the same time, he also stressed the need for motorists and pedestrians alike to respect the rules of the road.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “Last night some time around six thirty police were called to between mile 49 and 50 on the Hummingbird Highway and there they observed the lifeless body of a male person. Not too far away was a motorcycle and there was also a two head in the area. Initial investigation revealed that there was a collision between the tow head and the rider of that motorcycle which lead to the cyclist being fatally injured. Police are investigating that matter to see where we go with it and let me say that we are again seeing a spike in motorcycle accidents and we want to appeal to motorcycle drivers to please remember that the rules of the road also apply to you. I almost had my own misfortune with one the other day who overtook on the wrong side of the road thankful I looked in my rearview mirror and I saw that he was right there overtaking and I pulled away from him. But one of the main things that we’re seeing motorcycle riders do is that they overtake vehicles on the wrong hand side of the road and that is very very dangerous. Riding again your motorcycle without helmet is really bad. The helmet is worn for a reason to make sure that if you get involved in any accident that helmet protects your head from being severely injured by the pavement or whatever the road may be made of. And so we just want to caution motorcycle riders again to please exercise caution. When you’re on those motorcycles you’re not on a bulldozer you’re very vulnerable compared to a person in a vehicle or whatever type of vehicles and so just again, ride motorcycles with due care and attention and follow the rules of the road.”

As we reported today, the towhead with an empty flatbed was heading from Belmopan to Armenia Village, and behind it, a man was traveling in the same direction. We understand that the towhead swerved to the left of the road, then back to the right, and Lemus hit the rear of the towhead. However, the towhead’s driver continued towards Armenia Village.
