The Mayor of San Ignacio/ Santa Elena Town, Earl Trapp, also weighed in on this weekend’s UDP convention. Trapp says that while he continues to support the party and respects the outcome of that convention, he believes this only further contributes to the divide that is occurring within the party and is now spilling over into the constituency. As the results were called out yesterday evening and John Saldivar was named the UDP Standard Bearer for Belmopan, several of the supporters of the opposing candidates began shouting harsh criticism. Trapp says that the party needs to strategize and stay away from activities that further weakens the party/
Earl Trapp, Mayor, San Ignacio/ Santa Elena: “So that is respected and in the same light because of the party being so fragmented I believe that this is not the time for this party to conduct conventions all over. I think they need to sit down with the different candidates and have a candid discussion on the way forward and see if they can amicably come to one resolve. It has to be something very mature though. Something that the candidates must have the party at heart. And if they can reason then they should nominate one person and avoid a convention. What conventions does is that it continues to divide us as a party, it continues to fragment the party. If you look at a couple of the clips after the votes were counted and Mr.Saldivar was named the victor if you notice same UDP supporters were hurling negativities at the party for Mr.Saldivar and I would tell you what they were hurling is simply the same thing I’ve been telling the chairman of this party, the leader that this convention or conventions will just continue to fragment us as a party.”
