Yesterday, a parent came forward explaining that their daughter had been propositioned by a teacher at her school. The student attends Canaan Seventh-Day Adventist High School and one of her male teachers sent her messages on January 23. The screenshots we’ve seen show the teacher trying to advance an intimate relationship with her. The child showed her parents the messages and the parents went to the school to complain. Principal Jaime Roberts confirmed to our newsroom yesterday that the teacher was placed on administrative leave and an investigation is underway by the school’s Managing Authority. The Education Rules does say that a school’s managing authority quote “may place a teacher on administrative leave while the Managing Authority investigates an allegation of misconduct…if the Managing Authority has grounds to believe that it is in the best interest of the students and the school to do so…” As for the Ministry of Education, they have issued a statement late this evening, which says in part, quote “The Ministry of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology has been made aware of the allegations of misconduct against a teacher at Canaan SDA High School…we are disturbed and deeply concerned by these allegations” End quote. Our calls to the school today have gone unanswered; however, the child’s parent told us that the Ministry has not reached out to them and called the Ministry’s late evening statement “generic” and “not saying anything”.
