And during this morning’s police press briefing, Police COmmissioner Chester Williams was asked about the latest crime statistics. The ComPol explains that so far this year, the number of major crimes is on the decreased.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “The only crime I follow most are murders and the reason for that is because a life lost to me is a whole family that gets affected by it. Myself and my team we were tirelessly to try and avert murders from occurring and as far as I am aware and without the stats available the murders are down compared to last year, the figures are down by more than ten which is like around 16-20% reduction. Even if you were to compare 2022 stats to 2018 and you can show that in 2022 you have a reduction compared to 2018 it is something that should be applauded for the simple fact that 2018 was pre covid that’s one and two 2018 we had less population than 2021. With an increase in population you’d anticipate that there may also be an increase in crime. COVID came and put many people into poverty. Those persons who were at marginal line have now fallen back into poverty due to COVID and like he rightly said this morning that one of the leading causes of crime is poverty. So if you have more people in poverty now because of COVID you would anticipate that 2022 major crime would be well above 2018 and we are still down. So I still think that the efforts of the police in policing the country despite the difficult times we’re in, despite the number of persons who have fallen into poverty, should be applauded and more so the fact that we have a lower major crime rate than 2018 that too should be applauded.”
