The NTUCB also has an issue with the Prime Minister getting an increase in transport allowance. As of last November, PM Briceño’s transport allowance was reportedly increased from one thousand, three hundred Belize Dollars to four thousand Belize dollars per month. President of the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB), Luis Luke Martinez, says this is concerning to see when public officers and the general population of Belize continue to struggle under economic strains.
Prime Minister Briceño, responded to these criticisms by saying (quote) “I understand their frustration but the truth of that if GOB were to get me a vehicle and pay for the upkeep and repairs it will cost GOB way more than the allowance I am being given.” (End quote) It is noted that the Prime Minister is often seen using his vehicle to attend official events across the country.
