People’s Constitution Commission Bill Passed into Law

People’s Constitution Commission Bill Passed into Law

The House of Representatives today passed the People’s Constitution Commission Bill into law. As we’ve been reporting, the Commission will draft and guide the process of promulgating a new Constitution for Belize or amendments to the Belize Constitution. That Commission will be chaired by former PUP Belmopan Mayor Anthony Chanona. Chanona’s selection attracted criticisms that the government refuted. Those criticisms were raised again by Opposition Leader Moses Shyne Barrow who got a pointed response from Prime Minister John Briceno.

More than twenty groups are being represented on the Commission. As the PM explained a sub-committee will be established to represent over groups. The PM explained that each Belizean has the chance to have their voice heard by writing or seeking an audience with the Commission.
