Port Need Berthing Facilities to Accommodate Larger Cruise Ships

The Ministry of Tourism continues to look for different avenues to attract more tourists to the country. While more airlines continue to partner with Belize, establishing new routes, the ministry is monitoring cruise tourism. Cruise lines have raised concerns about the lack of berthing facilities near Belize City. Waterloo Investment Holding Limited’s proposed port expansion plan included a berthing facility component; however, that project has been rejected by the National Environmental Appraisal Committee (NEAC). The docking facilities at the Fort Street Tourism Village does not offer berthing facilities. CEO Solano concedes that it is important for a port in Belize City to offer berthing facilities to safeguard the future of cruise tourism.
