The BBS is pushing forwards with the implementation of EELS

The Belize Bureau of Standards (BBS) is moving full steam ahead with its Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme (EELS). The energy competence initiative seeks to provide Belizeans with the relevant information to make good energy choices. The project aims to implement a label system for refrigerators, air conditioners, and light bulbs to inform consumers of the levels of electricity each product consumes. The BBS is embarking on the phase of the project which includes developing a third-party verification system as well as developing energy policy standards. Director of the BBS, Jose Trejo, explained that the project will allow Belize to be on par with recent energy efficiency standards implemented by CARICOM.

Trejo also noted that the initiative would not have been possible without the BBS’ cooperation agreement with the (Mexican) Association of Normalization and Certification (ANCE).

The initiative is funded by the European Union through a thirteen million euro grant and is being undertaken by the Belize Bureau of Standards (BBS), the CARICOM regional organization for standards and quality (CROSq), and the Ministry of Public Utilities.
