UB holds the third annual Gian Ghandhi Memorial Lecture

Today, the University of Belize held its third Gian Gandhi Memorial Lecture under the theme “Talent Migration & Development”. The lecture is an annual event held in honour of the late attorney at law and former Solicitor General, Gian Ghandhi. He was also a benefactor to the university and a public servant for several years. Today’s discussion featured several presentations on migration from three women guest speakers. Lecturer, in the Faculty of Management & Social Sciences, Melanie Smith, explained the important role migrants, who are classified as talent migrants, play in the countries where they reside.

Gandi’s niece, Shefalika Gandhi, a Clinician in Student Mental Health at Cornell Medical College in the US State of New York, explained that students travelling abroad to study may face mental challenges from being away from home.

Diana Locke, Director of the International Organization of Migration, spoke about the government’s ongoing amnesty program and how her organization is working to assist migrants applying for the program.
