In the weeks leading up to the convention, the Party Leader, Moses “Shyne” Barrow, did not shy away from publicly expressing support for Retired Colonel George Lovell. Barrow insisted that between him and businessman, Emil Torres, Lovell would be a stronger opponent for the Former Minister of National Security, John Saldivar. Saldivar remained confident of his victory throughout the day, despite not having the support of the Party Leader. Barrow has been adamant about Saldivar’s removal from the party due to his designation by the U.S. State Department for significant corruption while in office. Despite his endorsement of Lovell, Barrow did not attend the convention yesterday. Love News reached out to him this morning for comment. The Party Leader responded by saying (quote) “Congratulations to all the Candidates for keeping Democracy alive and demonstrating how viable the UDP is in Belmopan! The people of Belmopan have spoken in one of our most sacred Democratic exercises. Thus we respectfully move forward with the choice of the People.” (end quote).
